The song “Scentless Apprentice” was written about Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, a historical horror novel about a perfumer’s apprentice born with no body odor of his own but with a highly developed sense of smell, and who attempts to create the “ultimate perfume” by killing virgin women and taking their scent.It also has a connection with Dave, who actually wrote the guitar part. Dave was quoted, saying “One of my favourite lines in a Nirvana song — which is fucking dark and which I didn’t realise the weight of until I sat in my house in Seattle playing Ian MacKaye the first mixes of in Utero — is the line on Scentless Apprentice where Kurt sings, ‘You can’t fire me because I quit.’ If there’s one line in any song that gives me the chills it’s that one.
